Hunterdon County Farmhouse

This c.1740 stone farmhouse in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, near the Delaware River, needed extensive renovations when my clients bought it. They love to cook while they’re here at their weekend retreat and the kitchen was a top priority. Working with interior designer Celeste Callaghan, cabinets were handcrafted to perfectly evoke a farmhouse kitchen. Lighting was integrated into the large hand-hewn beams. I designed a new stair to replace a very steep narrow stair and reconfigured the beams as needed to get adequate headroom. Beaded board siding was used to finish some of the new interior walls, and antique heart pine wide-plank floors were installed to match the original floors of the house.

We added an enclosed porch adjacent to the kitchen that serves as both a sitting room and a dining room. This room has floor-to-ceiling double hung windows that frame great views in every direction. The flagstone floor and the wood board ceiling reinforce the exterior feeling of the room, while the hot water radiant heat in the floor ensures an inviting warmth.
