Artist’s Cottage

The site for this new home in Solebury Township, Bucks County, was a beautiful property with steep slopes and natural woodlands. The site happened to already have an older ranch house and garage located in a lovely spot next to a small tributary of the Paunacussing Creek. By building the new home and garage on the foundations of the existing we were able to locate the house on the nicest part of the property, which would otherwise not have been permitted by the township zoning code. From the new front porch one can hear the creek, or talk to neighbors walking by on the quiet road.

This contemporary cottage is a weekend retreat for an artist from New York City. The home has an open plan living, dining and kitchen space with kitchen cabinets and built-in bookshelves designed by interior designer Celeste Callaghan. The home has three bedrooms, one of which has a window seat with drawers below. A balcony overlooks the sitting area next to the kitchen. It is lit by dormers on both sides, and has a custom designed railing fabricated by Lucien Peebles. My client’s studio space is located above the two-car garage, and can be accessed from the second floor of the house. The studio door opens to a garden area where the natural slope meets the second floor level of the house.
